Digging in my backyard in Tucson, I hit a 900-year-old Hohokam pot and almost broke it with my shovel
I was digging a hole for a new fence post last month about two feet down and my shovel clanged off something that wasn't a rock. Turns out it was the rim of a clay pot, and I had already nicked it pretty good before I realized what I was looking at. I stopped right away and called the Arizona State Museum, and a archaeologist came out two days later to check the site. She said it was Hohokam, probably from around 1100 AD, and that my backyard was likely part of an old village. The nick I put in it was small enough that they could still study it, but she told me I got lucky because a harder swing would have shattered it. Now I use a hand trowel and go slow whenever I dig past a foot, and I keep a bucket of water nearby to rinse finds instead of scrubbing them. Has anyone else accidentally hit artifacts while doing yard work, and what did you do after?
