Geophysics survey finally made sense after I stopped staring at the raw data

I spent 3 seasons in eastern Colorado fighting with magnetometer readings. Everything looked like noise to me, I was ready to write it off as a useless tool for that type of soil. Then a guy from the state survey showed me how to slice the data into 10 centimeter depth bins instead of looking at the whole grid at once. Suddenly the old foundation lines popped right out. Took me a whole afternoon to reprocess one site but now I wont run a project without doing that first. Anyone else had a data processing step that turned a so-so tool into their favorite one?

Man, that's a pretty big leap from "tool is useless" to "favorite thing ever" over one afternoon of slicing data. I mean sure, some basic filtering helps, but sounds like you just got lucky with that particular site, or maybe you were just staring at it wrong before.
