Heard a podcast host say the Sutton Hoo helmet proves the 'Dark Ages' weren't dark. I think that's a huge oversimplification.
They were talking about the craftsmanship and trade links shown by the find. Sure, it's a great object. But using one rich king's burial to argue against centuries of societal collapse, population drop, and lost literacy across England feels like picking evidence. It was on 'The Ancient World Today' episode from last Tuesday. Has anyone else read something that pushes back on this 'bright Dark Ages' trend?

Gotta admit, my own 'Dark Ages' were just me losing my keys three times in one week, not a whole civilization. That helmet can't really speak for everyone, can it?

Ugh, totally. It's like saying a nice car today means everyone's rich. That helmet is cool but it's just one thing.

You see this everywhere, people taking one shiny thing to ignore a bigger, messier picture.
