Hot take: people keep calling the new Roman road find in York a 'highway' and it's driving me nuts (it's a local access road, you can tell by the curb stones)

But isn't a highway just a road that goes a long way? If it connected parts of the city, maybe it was a big deal back then.

Oh man, that reminds me of my friend who got lost trying to follow some old "highway" signs in Boston. Turned out it was just a super narrow one-way street now, lol. Guess it was a big deal like 300 years ago.

My GPS still calls that stretch of road a highway near the old market. You have to ignore the digital maps and just follow the actual street signs there. It's the only way to avoid those weird dead ends.

Exactly, their main roads were probably just our regular streets, so the word's meaning totally changes.
