Lost the exact spot of my test pit in the rain and redid 12 meters of grid to find it
I was surveying a small site outside Tucson last month when a real monsoon cell came out of nowhere and soaked my field notebook. We had flagged a 12 meter grid with pin flags, but the runoff knocked half of them flat and my sketch of the test pit location was just a smear of blue ink. I sat in the truck for about 20 minutes feeling stupid, then drove back out the next morning with a second person and a handheld GPS. We re-walked the whole grid and re-pinned everything on the UTM coords I had logged in my phone the night before. Took us about 4 hours instead of the 45 minutes it should have, but the pit was exactly where the GPS said, down to a couple centimeters. Now I keep a pencil and a Rite in the Rain book in my chest pocket no matter what the forecast says. How do you all back up your provenience notes in the field when the weather turns on you?
