My trowel snapped on day 3 of a dig near Cortez and I nearly quit the season
I was digging a small Ancestral Puebloan site outside Cortez, Colorado last July when the tip of my trowel just snapped off in the dirt. It was a cheap one I had used for two seasons, and I had been scraping right along a slab of bedrock I should have gone around. I spent 20 minutes on my knees with a magnet fishing the broken tip out of the screen, then borrowed a Marshalltown from a grad student and finished the unit without another issue. Turned out the broken piece was sitting right next to a fire pit feature we mapped the next morning. Has anyone else had a tool fail at the worst possible moment on a dig? Want to know if I should just buy a better trowel or keep abusing the cheap ones.
