My uncle who digs at a site in Turkey told me looters hit the same trench twice in a month and it changed how I see museum pieces
My uncle has worked a dig near Zeugma for years and he called me last month to vent about looters coming back to the same trench twice in a few days, this time with a metal detector and a shovel. He said the holes they leave behind destroy the dirt layers, so even if we find something in that spot later we lose all record of where it sat or how old it is. Before that call I just thought of artifacts as cool objects in glass cases. Now when I walk through a museum I catch myself wondering what got ripped out of the ground and thrown away so that one coin could make it to a dealer. Anyone here ever talked to a site worker about how bad looting actually is on their dig?
