Rinsing pottery shards in the sink cost me $40 in plumbing

Found a promising midden pile near a creek outside Boise, brought home a bag of shards to clean. Thought a few minutes under the tap was harmless. Three days later my drain clogged solid with clay silt and tiny bone fragments. Plumber at 8AM said he's seen it twice this year from amateur field cleaning. Now I use a 5 gallon bucket with water and a mesh strainer outside, let everything settle for a day, then dump the liquid in the yard. Shards come out cleaner too since the grit falls to the bottom. Anybody else ruin a drain or sink doing this?

Did you try letting the bucket sit before pouring the water out? That trick saved my pipes after a similar mess, now I never rush the settling part.
