A regular told me my fades were too high, took me a minute to get it
I've been cutting for about 5 years, mostly in a small shop near Pittsburgh. One older guy who comes in every 2 weeks on Tuesday mornings kept saying my fades started too high up on the sides. At first I thought he was just picky, but after he showed me a photo from like 1998 of his old barber's work, I saw it. The blend was starting almost at the temple line, way lower than what I learned in school. I adjusted my guard steps and started dropping the fade start point by about an inch. Took me maybe 6 or 7 cuts to feel natural with it, but now a bunch of my regulars ask for the same thing. Has anyone else had a client push back on something that seemed outdated but actually made their work better?
Gotta disagree with you here. That low fade look is basically a flat top holdover, it can make the head look boxy and dated if the guy doesn't have the right face shape for it. I've had old timers ask for that too, but after I do it, half of them come back in two weeks asking me to take it higher because their wife said it looked weird. I think you went from one extreme to the other. The real fix is probably somewhere in the middle, like starting the blend a half inch lower than what you learned, not a full inch. Respect the old school, but don't let one nostalgic client rewrite what works for most heads.
