Client told me my fades were leaving a 'hard line' at the bottom

Had a regular in Dallas last Thursday. He pointed right at the transition and said it looks like a helmet line. I switched from a straight clipper-over-comb to blending with the trimmer first. Anyone else get told something obvious they missed for years?

Gotta push back on this one man. That hard line at the bottom isn't always something you're doing wrong, sometimes it's just how their hair grows. I've had clients with this really sharp transition where the nape hair stops and the skin starts, and no matter what you do with a trimmer or clipper, that line is gonna show if you look close enough. Blending with the trimmer first can help soften it, sure, but I've seen dudes chase that perfect fade for 20 minutes and still end up with a line because the client's hair genetics just won't play ball. Next time someone points it out, try using a half guard or a corner of the clipper blade to feather it out instead of going straight in with the trimmer, that's what fixed it for me on stubborn heads.

Oh man, you're telling me I've been the guy chasing that perfect fade for way too long... pretty sure half my clients have sat there thinking "just give me the uneven line already, I have places to be.
