Ditch the plastic guards, freehand your blend line

For months I struggled with that harsh step where the #2 meets the open section on every skin fade. No matter how I angled the guard, I got a visible line that showed up under shop lights. Last Tuesday I finally tried something different: I clamped my clippers with the blade set to zero and freehanded the blend using just my wrist and a steady scoop motion. Took me three cuts on regulars before I felt confident, but the transition came out so smooth that one guy asked if I used a razor. The key for me was starting the scoop above the natural occipital bone and pulling down slow, not rushing the curve. I still use guards for the bulk, but the last quarter inch is all freehand now, and my rebook rate for fades has jumped noticeably. Anyone else cut their blend line completely freehand, or do you stick with the half-guard trick for that final stretch?
