Hot take: A regular told me my neckline fades were too harsh for his skin

He came in last Thursday and said the line was sharp enough to feel for days. I switched to using a softer guard and more blending passes on the next cut. Do you think a softer fade is better for sensitive skin, or should the client just toughen up?

My old shop taught me the opposite.

My regular at the old shop loved that sharp line, said it showed the work. I get what bettymiller is saying about irritation, but a clean fade is what some guys come back for. It's about reading the client's skin and hair type, not just one rule.

Henderson's right, they drill that into you at some places. I had a barber years ago who insisted on those razor sharp lines, said it was the only "real" way to do it. But man, I've seen guys with red, bumpy skin for a week after a cut like that. Switching to a softer guard and taking the time to blend it out is just being a good barber. The client shouldn't have to toughen up if a better technique is available.
