I used to think those cheap plastic guards were fine for clipper work

Saw a guy at the shop in Austin switch to metal ones about three months back. His fades went from looking choppy to super clean, like night and day. He said the plastic ones flex too much and mess up your lines. Now I won't touch the plastic ones. Anyone else notice a big difference with better guards?

Yeah the plastic ones are trash for real precision work. They warp over time and even a little flex throws off your zero gap setting. Switched to metal guards last year and my line consistency improved immediately, it's just a more solid tool.

My old plastic Wahl guards lasted five years with zero warp issues. Honestly I think it comes down to how you store them, not the material. Victor651 mentioned crisp lines, but I get the same sharpness from plastic if I keep them in the case. Tbh the metal ones just feel too heavy on my clippers for my taste.

Totally saw the same thing. Plastic guards feel flimsy and ruin the crispness of a line. Switched to metal and my fades got way sharper overnight.
