My uncle's balding advice made me lose a regular

My uncle, who cut hair in Baltimore for 30 years, kept telling me to use more thinning shears on crown work. He swore it blended everything. Tried it on a guy with thick curly hair last month, ended up with patchy spots all over, he asked for his money back and went down the street. Has anyone else gotten old school advice that just doesn't work on modern textures?
