Old school barber told me to stop using hot lather on every head
Had this barber Frank, been cutting since the 80s, watch me slather hot lather on a guy with psoriasis. He pulled me aside and said you're just irritating the skin more. I thought he was being old fashioned but after a week of skipping hot lather on those clients I got way less complaints about burning. Now I only use it on people with normal scalps. Any of you guys adjust your prep based on skin condition?

The towel thing is a perfect example because people don't realize how much buildup happens when you go overboard. Same with hot lather on sensitive scalps, the heat and moisture just opens up the pores too much and lets all the oils and irritants sink deeper. I've also found that skipping the pre-shave oil on guys with really dry skin makes a difference, it just sits on top and clogs things up. Sometimes the simplest routine is the best one, less is more when the skin is already struggling.

Three years ago I had a contractor tell me to stop pressure washing my deck every spring. Said I was blasting the soft wood away and it would rot faster. Same principle. We think more is better but sometimes you just need to adjust based on what you're working with. Like how you don't use fabric softener on towels or bleach on dark clothes. It's about matching the treatment to the material not just doing the same thing every time.
