Overheard a teenager ask why haircuts cost more than video games
Last Saturday at the shop in Arlington, this kid maybe 16 years old walks in with his dad. His dad sits down for a skin fade and the kid looks at the price board and says out loud, 'That's more than the new game I want.' Dad didn't even blink, just said, 'Games don't fix your interviews.' It got me thinking about how we price what we do. We're not selling 20 minutes of scissors work, we're selling the confidence someone carries for the next 3 weeks. That kid didn't get it yet, but the dad sure did. Has anyone else noticed younger customers comparing prices to stuff like consoles or sneakers? How do you handle that conversation without sounding defensive?

Funny you mention this, I had almost the same thing happen with a guy who wanted a $25 cut but brought up how his PlayStation was on sale for the same price. I just told him, yeah, but the PS5 doesn't walk into a job interview with you, and it doesn't make your ex do a double take at the grocery store. He laughed and actually ended up getting the full package with the beard trim. It's not about being defensive, it's just reminding them what they're actually paying for, and sometimes a little joke gets that across better than a lecture.
