Walked into a shop in Nashville and saw zero clipper guards on the wall

Stopped by a buddy's barbershop last Saturday to borrow some product and noticed his whole station setup had no guard rack, just a pile of faded numbers in a drawer. He swears it speeds him up because he never grabs the wrong size, but I've always kept mine visual to avoid mixing up a 2 on one side and a 4 on the other. My system takes me two extra seconds per cut, his saves him maybe five minutes a day, yet I'd panic without seeing the sizes. Am I just stuck in my ways or does anyone else think visible guards are part of the craft, not just storage?

and honestly Ive been on both sides of this one. I used to keep my guards all fanned out on the rail too, but then I started doing a lot of house calls and had to downsize to a pouch, so I got used to just grabbing by feel. The trick for me was setting up my drawer the exact same way every single time, like smallest to biggest left to right, and never letting anyone else touch it. Once my fingers know where a 2 lives without looking, I got faster, but it took a solid month of messing up a few cuts before that muscle memory kicked in. Your buddy might genuinely be quicker, but if visual is what keeps your fades even, dont force a change just cause it sounds efficient. I keep a tiny laminated size chart taped inside my drawer too, just as a backup for those brain fog days.
