Client told me to stop emailing, now I call first and it works

Had a contractor in Austin tell me my 3-page breakdowns were scaring off his bookkeeper. He said just give him a ballpark over the phone and send one line after. Tried it with 4 new clients since, marked up my rate by 12% and nobody blinked. Anyone else find that less paperwork actually gets you more money?

Man, that reminds me of my buddy Dave who runs a small HVAC crew. He used to send these giant invoices with itemized parts and labor codes, and customers would question every single line. His accountant finally told him to just send a total with 'service completed' and now his clients pay faster than ever. People just want the number, not a novel.

Wait, you marked up 12% and nobody blinked because you stopped sending the detailed stuff? That tells me the breakdowns were never the problem, the price was just too low before. The less paperwork thing just gave you room to charge what you should have been charging all along. People pay for trust, not for spreadsheets.
