Couldn't believe a client actually paid my higher quote without blinking
A guy in Topeka asked me to refinish his office floors, so I threw out a number 30% over my normal rate just to test him, and he said yes on the spot. Has anyone else accidentally discovered they were undercharging for years because nobody ever pushed back?

Man that's a good feeling when it works out like that.

That happened to me with my landscaping business. I was doing small jobs for years and then a big property owner asked for a quote so I doubled my usual price thinking he'd say no. He didn't even flinch and now I do all his work at that rate. It's funny how we set our own limits until someone shows us we're wrong.

Actually the thing about doubling prices isn't always a smart move for everyone. That worked out great for you because the rich guy saw value in your work, but if you double your price for someone who's just shopping around, they'll walk away and that's it. You gotta know your customer first. The bigger mistake people make is they never raise their prices at all for years, even when they're clearly worth more. Your story proves that sometimes the market is telling you you're too cheap and you just don't hear it.
