Deposit demands turned a simple contract into a standoff

I clean houses solo, and last month a new customer in Portland refused my 20% booking deposit because she said it smelled like a scam. I held firm since the previous no-deposit gig left me with $180 of unpaid work after a no-show. She finally paid the $45 up front, but not before lecturing me for 10 minutes about trust. Has anyone else had to explain that deposits protect both sides, or do you just eat the risk to keep the peace?
