I finally saw what my old agency charged clients and I was sick
A buddy of mine who still works there sent me a redacted invoice last month, and I saw my old shop billed $185 an hour for the writing work I was doing at $22 an hour. That gap is the whole reason I went freelance, and it's why I stopped saying yes to the first number a client throws out. Now when someone says "what's your rate" I quote a flat project fee off a scope sheet instead of an hourly number, which killed the haggling almost overnight. Curious if anyone here has ever found out what their employer billed for them, and how you handled the rate talk after that.
Ha, guess I should have just asked for $185 an hour and seen if anyone blinked. Honestly though, seeing that gap would mess with my head too. I found out once what a client paid the agency versus what landed in my check, and I spent a whole weekend doing math on a napkin like some kind of sad accountant. Good move switching to flat fees, hourly is a trap for the worker every single time.
