I raised my rate by $15 an hour last month and lost two regulars, should I have grandfathered them in?
Three years ago I started cleaning houses in Beaverton and set my rate at $35 an hour, and I never touched it until last month when I finally went to $50. One lady I had cleaned for every other Tuesday since 2021 texted back "That is more than I budgeted" and quit, and a guy in Hillsboro did the same the next day. My sister says you grandfather old customers at the old price and only charge new ones the higher rate, but my neighbor says that just means you work forever for 2019 money. What did you all do when you finally bumped your prices, did you let the long timers keep the old number or did you rip the bandaid off?
That "more than I budgeted" text stings, been there. Losing two regulars at once after holding your rate for three years is rough, but $35 in 2021 money is basically charity now. You did the right thing, and the ones who stay will pay what you're actually worth.
