Just realized my client suddenly stopped pushing back on my rates after I benchmarked them
I had this one client in Seattle who always tried to haggle my hourly rate down by $15 every 6 months, but last month I sent them a quick spreadsheet showing market averages for my niche and they just said 'okay that looks fair' without any fight. It took me maybe 2 hours to pull data from 3 freelancer salary sites and a local coworking survey. Has anyone else seen their rate talks get easier after sharing real numbers like that?

Honestly my last client in Portland tried to talk me down $20 an hour for months. I sent them a screenshot from a freelance rate calculator and they folded immediately. Real numbers shut down the haggling fast.

Ruby, that trick with the rate calculator is clever. I've noticed this pattern goes way beyond freelancing though - people try to talk you down on anything from a used car to lawn care, and they always fold when you show them a third-party source with real data. My neighbor spent weeks haggling with contractors until he printed out a cost estimation guide from the local builders association. They stopped arguing after that. It's like people respect a printed number more than your word.

Wish my rate calculator had a "confidence booster" setting.
