Picked a $60 Gateway drum over a $250 stick burner for my first comp, and it got me a call
Signed up for the Smoke on the Square contest in Springfield last month with zero comp experience. I had two choices, borrow my buddy's heavy offset stick burner or buy a cheap Gateway drum, and I went with the drum since I could run it alone without staying up all night feeding splits. Took 6th in chicken out of 34 teams, which felt huge for a first timer. Now I'm wondering if I should stick with the drum or start learning a stick burner before my next one, what would you do?
Why mess with what's working? Drum got you a call your first time out, that's your setup now. Learn the stick burner later if you want, but I'd ride that Gateway till it stops paying out.
