That $500 offset smoker lid mod, worth it or a trap?

I spent $500 on a custom counterweight kit for my offset smoker last month. It made opening the lid way easier, but I still have to babysit the temp like crazy. Some guys swear it's the best upgrade for holding heat steady, others say it just messes with the airflow if you don't dial it in perfect. I tried it at a comp in Austin and ended up with a bitter bark on one brisket. Has anyone else dropped cash on a lid mod and regretted it, or is there a trick I'm missing?
