Watched a guy go from backyard griller to competition winner in 18 months
He just focused on nailing down his fire management and stopped switching rubs every month, has anyone else seen that kind of jump from just sticking to the basics?

Ive been trying to nail down fire management for about 10 years now and my biggest competition win was when my neighbor admitted my burgers were "pretty decent" so that guy definitely has something figured out I dont.

Man, I gotta disagree a little bit. I think fire management is one of those things that sounds simple but is actually really hard to get right in different conditions. The wind, the humidity, the type of charcoal you use, all of that changes how your fire behaves. That guy might have just had a bunch of free time to practice every weekend, or maybe he got lucky with a competition that matched his specific style. I know a guy who spent two years on his fire control and still got smoked by a lady using a gas grill and a smoke tube. Sometimes it's more about the meat and the timing than just the fire.
