A motel owner in Flagstaff told me I was cleaning chains wrong, and she's right

I stopped at this little motel outside Flagstaff after a long ride and the owner saw me degreasing my chain with spray. She said I was pushing all the grit INTO the links and showed me her old method, wipe it down with a rag dipped in solvent, let it dry, then drip oil one drop per roller. I tried it on my shop's rentals this week and drivetrains are running way smoother after 3 test rides. Has anyone else ditched the spray can for this rag method?
