Appreciation post: a $12 chain checker saved me from replacing three drivetrains this year
Ran a shop out of my garage in Boise for about 4 years now. Up till January I was doing chain wear by eyeballing it or the old 12 inch ruler trick. Kept getting guys coming back at like 800 miles with skipping gears, and I was eating the cost on some of those.
Bought a cheap Park CC-2 off a buddy and started checking every bike that rolled in. Turned out almost half of them were past 0.75 before the owner even noticed shifting problems. Now I catch them at 0.5, swap the chain for $30, and the cassette lasts way longer. Did 3 full drivetrain swaps in all of last year. This year so far, zero.
Funny part is I used to think those little tools were for guys who didn't know how to feel a chain. Turns out my hands were lying to me the whole time.
What's the wear tool you keep on the bench that actually earns its spot?
