Can we talk about that old shop guy who told me to always face the same direction when truing wheels

Guy at the shop in Denver swore facing east every time would keep the wheel balanced, and after 6 months of doing it I realized he was just messing with me because the wheels come out fine either way, so has anyone else gotten weird superstitious advice that turned out to be total garbage?

omg that's wild! wait so you actually spun your whole wheel straight east for 6 months just because some random shop guy said so? i woulda been so mad when i found out lmao. honestly sounds like something my uncle would pull on a new kid at the bike co-op.

30 years of building wheels and I always just faced the garage door. Now I'm wondering if the sun angle actually does something to the spoke tension.

Sun angle could mess with your spoke grip if the rim heats unevenly.

Actually the sun angle thing is a real concern if you've got the wheel in direct sunlight while building... the rim can heat up and throw off your tension readings, but you'd have to be working outside for that to matter. But facing east specifically is just superstition haha.
