I finally had to explain why we don't fix flats for free

Most mechanics say you should never work for free, but I think helping out now and then is good. This older lady rolled in with a slow leak, and I patched it up quick while we chatted. Next thing, she shows up with three neighbors all expecting free tire fixes, and my co-worker just stared at me. It was pretty awkward trying to explain shop policy without sounding rude. I still believe in being nice, but maybe I need to draw a line.

Ever tried a "first one's free" policy?

Hold on, that can actually backfire if it makes the normal price seem like a trap later. Sets a weird, confusing tone right from the start.

Tough spot... learned that lesson with my own clients. Gotta say up front "this one's on the house" so they know it's a one time thing. Saves the headache later.

Yikes, I've been that guy before with a "quick freebie" that turned into a whole thing. My own sign now basically says "Nice gestures are not a subscription service." You learn to be kind but clear real fast.
