Just realized most squeaky bottom brackets are not the bearings at all
I had a bike on the stand at my shop in Sacramento for 3 visits where the owner swore the bearings were shot, and each time the noise came back after 2 rides. It turned out the crank bolt was dry and the plastic preload cap was barely snug, so the whole spindle was shifting a hair under load and sounding exactly like a bad bearing. How many of you pull the crank and check torque before you ever touch the bearings?
My first thought used to always be bearings too, until a guy at the shop showed me a creaky bike that just needed the crank bolt torqued to spec. I spent years chasing ghosts in the bottom bracket when the real fix was a dry bolt and a loose preload cap the whole time. Now I always pull the crank and check torque before I even think about ordering new bearings.
