Old timer at the Dayton swap meet told me to quit greasing freehub pawls, and now I'm second guessing 8 years of habit
He runs a repair stand there every month and said grease just gums up the pawls in cold weather, dry lube only. I've always packed them with Park Tool grease and never had a comeback, but he's been at it way longer than me. Anyone here actually had a pawl stick from grease, or is this just old school talk?
I've been packing pawls with Park Tool grease for about 6 years now, and the only time I had a sticky pawl was on a cheap hub where the spring was already shot. Cold weather thing seems overblown too, I ride in 20 degree mornings and my hubs still engage fine. That old timer might just have seen a few bad cases and blamed the grease instead of worn springs or grit. Sounds like old school talk to me.
