Overheard a guy at the co-op say he never checks bearing preload on hub overhauls...
I was at the Bicycle Kitchen in Austin last Saturday and this older mechanic was telling a newbie he just packs bearings with grease and tightens them until they feel right. No cone wrench, no checking for play, nothing. I thought about all the races I've seen eat themselves because they were run loose or too tight. Has anyone else seen shops skip this step and get away with it?

Most co-ops don't even have a scale that goes that fine.

Wait, is it bad that I just show up to the co-op with my kitchen scale from 2012 that barely fits in my bag? 😂 I've definitely had to eyeball it a few times when the co-op scale stopped at like 50 grams and I needed 5. Honestly, I just pretend I'm a baker on a cooking show and try to guess by hand. It never works but it's kinda fun when the cashier gives me a weird look. Pretty sure I've overpaid for spices at least three times because of it.

Used to think every co-op would have one handy, but seeing how many don't really changed my mind on that. What kind of scale do you usually bring along?
