Rant: Park Tool chain whip vs. the cheap one I used for 5 years in Denver

I was swapping cassettes last week at my shop in Denver and grabbed the Park Tool chain whip everyone swears by, but it slipped on a tight lockring and scratched my hub flange. My $12 no-name whip from 3 years ago never did that because it had a slightly longer handle for better leverage. Am I the only one who thinks the expensive tools aren't always built better for real shop use?

Wait, it slipped and scratched your hub flange? That's wild. I mean, I've used those Park ones before and always thought they had decent grip, but hearing it failed on a tight lockring makes me second guess them. The longer handle on the cheap one probably gave you better torque without the chain lifting, which makes sense now that you say it. Honestly, for $80 you'd expect it to handle a basic cassette swap without damaging anything. Maybe the Park ones are more for home mechanics than actual shop abuse, idk.

Respectfully disagree with you there abbyhall. Park tools are built for shop use, the issue is more about technique than grip - you gotta make sure the chain is seated right before you put any real force on it.
