Stop ignoring spoke tension meters, I learned the hard way
I used to just tension by feel and truing stand until a wheelbuilder in Denver told me my wheels would crack rims within a year. He took out his Park Tool TM-1 and showed me one spoke at 80 kgf and another at 115 kgf on the same side. Bought my own meter, retensioned a wheelset I did last month, and now I check every wheel I build. Anyone else skip tension meters because they thought feel was enough?

Bought a TM-1 about six years ago after a buddy's rear wheel kept eating drive side spokes and we could not figure out why. Turns out I was running them way over spec, like 140 kgf on a rim rated for 110, and the meter showed it in about ten seconds. Now I write the target tension on a piece of tape and stick it to the stand so I do not drift while I work.
