The homemade truing stand that outworks my shop's expensive one

Three years ago I made a truing stand out of an old fork, some angle iron, and two skateboard bearings in my garage in Portland. Last week I used it to fix a bent rear rim that the $400 Park Tool stand at work couldn't handle because the axle was too short to grip. Took me 20 minutes to set up the homemade rig and 15 more to get the wobble down to under 1mm. The shop stand sits gathering dust now for any quick jobs, but I honestly reach for the scrap version on anything weird. Why do we pay so much for fancy tools when a bit of creativity does the job better? Has anyone else got a janky homemade tool that outperforms the expensive stuff?
