Warning: The difference in a bike's feel after a full cable housing swap is wild

Had a customer bring in a 2018 gravel bike that felt 'mushy' shifting into the big ring. The old housing was original and looked fine, but the inner liner was totally compressed. I swapped it all out for fresh Jagwire housing, about 4 feet total. The before and after was night and day, the lever action went from vague and stiff to a crisp, solid click. Anyone else find that housing degrades way before the cables themselves give out?

Seriously? It's just cable housing. Feels like people make a huge deal out of tiny changes.

Yeah wendym87, but good housing makes a huge difference in shifting feel, it's not just a tiny change.

Just cable housing" is a huge understatement though.

You say "just cable housing" but @drew934 hit it on the head - that's underselling it big time. Good housing is the difference between crisp, instant shifts and that mushy, delayed feeling where you're never quite sure if the gear actually engaged. I swapped out my stock housing for some compressionless stuff last year and it was night and day, especially on the rear derailleur where the cable has to travel around tight bends. Bad housing lets the cable flex and absorb some of your pull, so you lose that direct feedback. It's a small part but it can make or break how your whole drivetrain feels, you know?
