DAE notice book club picks got way longer after 2020?
Last week I pulled up our club's list from 2019 and the average pick was around 280 pages, but everything we've read since last fall is pushing 500. I think it's the BookTok effect, everyone wants the thick fantasy series now, and we barely get through two chapters a meeting. Has your group started splitting books across two months to deal with this, or are we just slow?
Longer books are actually a good thing for a club. More pages means more to talk about, and if you can only get through two chapters a meeting that's a scheduling problem, not a book problem. Our group read a 700 page one last spring and it sparked way better talks than some 250 page book we finished in one sitting and had nothing left to say about. Split it over two months and you get a real deep dive instead of rushing to the end. Shorter books just mean everyone shows up with nothing to add by week three.
