Got roasted at my book club in Austin for picking 400 page doorstoppers, so I tried a 180 page novel and now I owe the group an apology

That apology is probably well earned because 400 pages really does scare people off at book club. What worked for me was mixing it up instead of going all in on short books, so one month I bring something slim and the next I bring the big one I actually want to talk about. People just want a book they can finish and still have thoughts about, so pick short ones that hit hard and save the doorstoppers for your own shelf.
