Had a moment in my local library's back room that changed how I pick book club reads

I was digging through the donation pile at the Oak Street Library last Tuesday and found a first edition of a novel nobody in our group had heard of. It got me thinking about how we always just grab what's on the bestseller list instead of hunting for the hidden gems sitting right under our noses. Does your book club ever pull picks from old library castoffs or donation bins?

Is it not wild how we all get stuck in the same patterns everywhere, not just with books? Like how everyone always orders the same thing off a menu instead of asking what the chef is actually excited about, or how we all watch the same five Netflix shows cause they're in the trending row.

Wait, you just found a first edition sitting in a donation pile?

Jump right in and check the bins at my library every month now. It's like how people only shop the end caps at grocery stores and miss the good deals in the middle aisles. Found a poetry collection from a small press last week that nobody on our social media feed had ever mentioned. This is the same reason why thrift stores have better clothes than the mall sometimes. We all get stuck in these loops of picking what's popular instead of what's actually interesting. Once you break that habit, you start seeing stories and things that make group talks way more fun.
