I finally understood why my book club picks kept getting voted down

Someone in my group last week said I always suggest 'important' books that feel like homework, and they just want something fun to talk about. So I picked a thriller for next month, and people actually seemed excited. Has anyone else had to switch up their suggestion style to get a book chosen?

That "feels like homework" line is so real. I wonder if the books you think are fun just have a different vibe than what the group sees as fun.

Ever read a book that felt like a chore, @rivera.hannah?

Totally get that vibe shift between groups. Sometimes a book club picks stuff that's "important" but just drains the fun out of reading for me. Makes you want to pick your own books just for the joy of it again.

Totally had that moment last year when I realized my picks were too "important" too. I read something about how book clubs work best when people actually look forward to the discussion, not dread it. @rivera.hannah your comment about different vibes is spot on, I had to learn the hard way that my idea of fun isn't always the group's idea of fun (especially when I'm trying to sneak in dense literary fiction).
