My book club almost split over whether you're allowed to hate the main character
We met at Dana's place in Reno last Thursday to talk about this novel where the narrator is just kind of a jerk the whole way through, and it turned into a real fight. Dana said if you don't like the main character you're reading it wrong, and Marcus shot back that he liked the book more because he couldn't stand her. Six of us sat there arguing for 40 minutes past when we normally wrap up, and I realized I'd been faking my way through part of it. I'd been nodding along saying the prose was beautiful, but what I really meant was I kept hoping the main character would get what was coming to her. Once I said that out loud, three other people admitted they felt the same and just didn't want to sound mean. It hit me that we spend half our meetings trying to sound smart instead of saying what the book actually made us feel. Now I want to know how your groups handle this. Do you all have one person who sets the tone, or does it change book to book?
