Our book club's copy of 'Beloved' literally fell apart mid-meeting

Last Tuesday, we were about 30 pages into discussing the ghost baby chapter when the spine on my paperback just snapped and pages scattered onto the coffee table. Nobody could find the next page, we had three different editions and none matched. I grabbed my phone and read the rest aloud from a library ebook, which actually made the debate way more intense since we were all staring at the same screen. Has anyone else had a physical book self-destruct right when you needed a key quote?

Used to be a hardcore physical book person. Thought ebooks were soulless and that the paper smell was half the experience. Then my copy of Moby Dick did the same thing, pages just slid out like a dead fish. We were deep into the whale chapter and I had to switch to my phone, and honestly the group got way more focused. Something about everyone looking at the same screen and following along line by line changed the whole vibe. Still love my books, but now I always have the ebook queued up as backup. It's just practical.
