Our book club's whole plan for 'Project Hail Mary' fell apart last night

We had this big thing set up where half of us were gonna argue the science was cool and half were gonna say it was too much, but then two people showed up saying they only read the first chapter. I spent like an hour making notes on the alien communication stuff too. So we just ended up talking about the movie cast for 45 minutes instead. Has anyone else had their whole debate topic just collapse because people didn't finish the book?

My notes on Rocky were longer than their reading list...

Ugh, been there. Honestly, I started using different colored highlighters for each main theme, like yellow for boxing as a job and blue for the love story. Then my notes were just a color-coded mess, but at least I could find stuff fast. Tbh, condensing those long notes into a one-page cheat sheet before the test saved me.

Honestly, I get why you'd take a ton of notes, but maybe that's the whole problem. Like, if your notes are longer than the book, you're just rewriting it and not really getting the point. I mean, the story is about feeling, not every single detail. You can spend so much time writing stuff down that you miss what actually makes it good. Maybe try just reading it once through without writing anything, and see what sticks with you after. Idk, maybe it's just me, but sometimes less notes means you actually remember more.

You only read the first chapter? The whole story is right there!
