Our club stopped picking books by vote and read 4 books in 3 weeks
Every pick used to take 40 minutes of arguing and we would still end on something half of us hated. At our meetup at Rosie's Diner in Austin two weeks ago we tried something new: one person gets to pick the book alone, but they have to lead the talk and bring questions. We finished The Overstory in 6 days and nobody stalled out. Has any other club tried letting one person run the whole pick, and did it blow up later?
So what happens when the person who picks the book also happens to be the slowest reader in the group? That's my worry with this setup. Like, our club has this one guy Dave who takes forever with everything, and if he picks something dense like The Overstory and then takes three weeks to finish, does everyone just sit around waiting? Does the group have a backup plan if the picker stalls out, or do you just trust that the person feels enough pressure to keep pace? And what about the opposite problem, where the picker hates the book halfway through and has to lead a talk on something they don't even like anymore?
