Our club's debate on ending 'Of Mice and Men' got heated over Zoom last Thursday

Three people threatened to quit over whether the ending is hopeful or just cruel, and one member in Portland admitted she'd reread it 5 times without ever changing her stance. Has anyone else had a pick split their group this bad, or did we just pick the wrong book for a bunch of stubborn readers?
