Shoutout to the 50 page rule for books I thought I'd hate

I used to bail on a book if the first 10 pages didn't grab me, but my book club in Phoenix kept pushing this "50 page rule" thing. Finally gave it a shot with a historical fiction novel called The Last Bookshop in London and hated the first 30 pages but by page 45 I was hooked. Now I feel like I've been missing out on tons of good books for years. Has anyone else had a book flip on them after a rough start?

My book club was the same about this rule. I read a thriller called The Silent Patient that started super slow but got crazy good after 40 pages.

Doesn't it seem like the same thing happens with all sorts of stuff, not just books? I've noticed that with new foods or even TV shows, if I stick with the boring part a little longer, the good stuff usually shows up. It's like our brains just need time to figure out if something's worth liking.
