Spent $140 on that fancy book club workbook, total flop for our group
Our club in Portland picked this guided reading workbook that promised deep analysis prompts and character maps, but every question felt like homework from a 9th grade class. We tried it for three meetings and people stopped showing up because it killed the fun conversation. Has anyone else ditched a structured guide and gone back to just talking about what stood out to you?

Man, that sounds like such a buzzkill. I heard about these guided workbooks from a friend who runs a book club in Seattle, and she said the same thing, it turns reading into a chore instead of a hangout. Like, who actually wants to fill out a character map when you could be arguing about whether the ending was fair or not? Good on you guys for ditching it, sometimes the best prompts are just asking "what the hell did you make of that last chapter?
