That one book club meeting where nobody had read the book
Last Wednesday I showed up to our monthly book club debate ready to argue about the ending of „The House in the Cerulean Sea.“ Turns out I was the only one who finished it. Three people admitted they only watched the audiobook sample, two forgot it was even this month, and one guy said he just skimmed the Wikipedia plot summary. We spent the whole hour talking about what we thought the book might be about instead of actually debating it. It was honestly more fun than the regular meetings where everyone has strong opinions. Has anyone else had a meeting where zero people actually read the assignment?

Used to think book club was pointless if people didn't do the reading. Thought it was a waste of everyone's time. But after sitting through that night where nobody had a clue, I actually changed my mind. The whole guessing game and comparing our made up versions of the plot was way more relaxed than the usual debates. Sometimes not knowing lets people actually listen instead of just waiting to argue their point.

Wait, did you guys at least pick a movie to watch instead or just wing it the whole time?

Shook me to my core reading this honestly. We literally spent two hours arguing about whether salt was a flavor or just a taste enhancer (my friend Greg refuses to back down on this). Ended up just doomscrolling through Netflix for the rest of the night without actually landing on anything.
