Tried two ways to run our book club and one was way better

Our group in Austin used to just pick a book and talk about it. Last month, we tried giving everyone 3 specific questions to think about before the meeting. The difference was huge, we talked for over 90 minutes and everyone had something to say. Before that, our chats would fizzle out in like 30 minutes. Has anyone else found a simple trick that made your book club discussions way better?

Give everyone a job for the next meeting. Someone finds background on the author, someone else looks up the time period it was written in, another person finds reviews. It forces people to do a little digging and brings in way more stuff to talk about. Stops the whole group from just saying whether they liked the book or not.

Totally agree, that's how you save a dead book club. We tried it and my friend who got "find weird fan theories" brought up the wildest stuff that changed how we all saw the ending. Makes the chat way deeper.

My job would be to find the snacks.
